A pause to restricted data deposits: what and why
Supporting a successful research data migration
We are pausing new restricted data deposits into the Restricted Access Data Repository (RADAR) between 20 July 2026 and 31 January 2027.
The break allows us to prepare for the new Research Data Repository. This change forms part of the University’s wider EDCIS (Ensuring Data Compliance, Insights and Sharing) (University of Leeds login required) programme, which is enhancing and streamlining systems that support research data and outputs. The new repository will create a more sustainable approach to restricted data.
The pause is necessary to reduce risk to the implementation project and will allow the team to focus on delivering a robust, sustainable platform for the future.
Importantly, this is a temporary change to enable long-term improvement. Support for restricted data will continue in several ways:
- access requests for existing restricted datasets will continue as normal
- alternative secure storage options and trusted external repositories will be signposted
- a REF exceptions process will be available where there is a clear requirement to deposit restricted data within a specific timeframe.
Research Services will support researchers to use alternative routes for managing restricted data. This includes creating metadata records to describe datasets while storing files in an approved secure University Research Data Storage Provision (University of Leeds login required) outside the repository. Where appropriate, researchers will also be signposted to trusted external repositories that support restricted data, such as the UK Data Archive.
