Free streaming, reading for fun, DIY and safe social spaces.
The Libraries are so much more than just a place to study.
The Libraries provides so much more than books and a place to study. From leisure reading and wellbeing to arts, crafts and hobbies, check out our round-up of the exciting things you can find in the library.
Streaming and reading for leisure
The Libraries gives you subscription access to a wide range of video, music and reading subscription services absolutely free.
Just use your University login details, and you can access The British Film Institute's BFI Player, letting you view thousands of the best films from around the world.
Kanopy also has some of the best TV and cinema around, as well as online lecture series in a range of topics that might give you the edge on your course or just set you on a path to learn about something that fascinates you.
Not only that, Overdrive lets you borrow the latest best-selling books, magazines, graphic novels and audiobooks online. You can install their Libby app and listen to your favourite books on the go or in the gym. And it’s all for free!
The audio-visual pages also list several theatre, education and music libraries you can access.
Feed your creativity with the Galleries
The Galleries and Cultural Collections are a part of the Libraries. We have two free galleries found in Parkinson Court, opposite the entrance to the Brotherton Library.
Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery holds fascinating items from our extraordinary cultural collections, while The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery displays beautiful items from the extensive University Art Collection, including work from Yorkshire legend David Hockney. Both hold regular exhibitions and public events.
You can also find regular creative sessions in the galleries, including Sketch Club and writing sessions. And if you want to get a little exercise in, check out the public art trail starring brilliant sculpture across the entire campus.
A safe place to meet
The libraries provide a central, 24/7 space on campus where you can meet friends. We have group and breakout spaces where you can socialise; please remember that other people may be working. We also always have staff available at reception points, as well as a webchat during the day, so you can get help whenever you need it.
Library Makerspace
On the ground floor of the Edward Boyle Library, you can find the Library Makerspace, where you can learn by doing and making. After you’ve booked your induction, you have access to a wide range of tech, with everything from sewing and hand tools to 3D printing, Computer-Aided Design and electronics.
They also run regular repair cafes, where you can bring electronics back to life or put a stitch in your best dress with guidance from our innovation partners.
Pause Spaces, featured collections and book swaps
We have featured collections of books and films themed around reading for leisure, comic studies and awareness months. These are collections of titles related to themes like Black History Month and LGBTQ+ awareness. If you are passionate about causes like these, you can also recommend titles for us to include. We have our awareness month items on the ground floor of Laidlaw Library and online.
Each of the libraries also has a Pause Space. These areas are away from the main study spaces and are decked out with comfy chairs, leisure reading and mental health material, as well as wellbeing activities like colouring, fidget toys and more. These are great for getting away from your desk and getting a mental reset.
And keep your eyes peeled for book swap events in the libraries. Drop off old books and pick up something you’ve never tried before. Great for light reading in the half term.
Last but not least…
Skills@Library and our digital capabilities service offer a range of workshops, as well as training on extracurricular activities like podcasting, graphic design and CV building through the Jisc Discovery tool.
