Winner of Leeds Early Career Publishing Prize launches book

Dr Andrea White celebrates publishing her open access monograph ahead of award’s 2025 return.

The first prize-winning submission from the Leeds Early Career Publishing Prize (ECPP) has been published by the White Rose University Press (WRUP).

It shows the quality of, and significant contribution made by, early career research, and it’s been a privilege to support Andrea through the process

Understanding Mental Causation by Dr Andrea White, offers a fresh perspective on one of the most debated areas in contemporary philosophy.

“I’m really pleased to share my research in Understanding Mental Causation,” said Dr White, “and the fact that this book is open access and can reach the widest possible audience should lead to interesting discussions. I think open access publishing is really important and hope it will become more commonplace."

This is the first of three prize-winning submissions published by White Rose University Press, with the other two volumes expected to follow in 2025. Each one demonstrates the quality and relevance of the early career research showcased by the prize, which celebrates the value and contribution of PhD research. The prize supports authors to publish an open access monograph, with guidance through the peer review process and all book processing charges and open access fees paid for.

Kate Petherbridge, White Rose University Press Manager, said: “It’s been brilliant to work with Dr White on this volume, and so fantastic to see the first of the volumes from the Leeds ECPP reach publication. It shows the quality of, and significant contribution made by, early career research, and it’s been a privilege to support Andrea through the process”.

The second iteration of the Early Career Publishing Prize launches on 24 February 2025. Professor Nick Plant, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation and Kate Petherbridge will host an Open Lunch event on 25 February to share more details.
