Join us for a fresh perspective on philosophy

Free event invites conversation on mental causation

How do our minds cause actions in the world? Can a new understanding of causation shift one of the most enduring debates in philosophy – the mind-body problem?

Join us to explore these questions at a special event celebrating the publication of Understanding Mental Causation by Dr Andrea White.

At this free, in-person event, White will present a bold, process-based theory of mental causation that challenges the traditional view that causation must be a relation between distinct events.

Drawing from her recent Open Access publication Understanding Mental Causation (White Rose University Press, 2024), White will explore why this shift in thinking matters not only for philosophers but for anyone interested in human agency, responsibility and how we make sense of action in the world.

The event will start with drinks and nibbles then include a talk by Andrea White, followed by a panel discussion and an audience Q&A. It will be supported by colleagues from White Rose University Press and there will be the chance to talk to the team about all things Open Access.

The event will take place in the Nexus lecture theatre, Discovery Way, Woodhouse, Leeds LS2 3AA on Monday 12 May 2025 from 5:15pm until 7pm.

Registration is required, book your ticket by 5 May.
