Take 50 seconds to learn 50 years of history.

Our Edward Boyle Library is celebrating its 50th birthday on the 14 October 2025, so take a trip down memory lane and discover five decades of Edward Boyle Library’s history.

1975–1985

With a different name, and a very different look, here’s what happened in the first 10 years of the Library:

  • 1977 – The lending of books on Sundays at the Edward Boyle Library was approved, with the proviso that ‘if it proves a failure, it can be dropped’
  • 1982 – Re-named Edward Boyle Library in honour of the former Vice Chancellor of the University, Lord Boyle of Handsworth, (also a former Conservative Minister of Education, 1962–64).
