1975–1985
With a different name, and a very different look, here’s what happened in the first 10 years of the Library:
- 1975 – Named the South Library
- 1975 – Officially opened on the 14 October by the Right Honourable Harold MacMillan, M.P.
- 1975 – Smoking was allowed on the staircases of the South Library (Edward Boyle)
- 1977 – The lending of books on Sundays at the Edward Boyle Library was approved, with the proviso that ‘if it proves a failure, it can be dropped’
- 1982 – Re-named Edward Boyle Library in honour of the former Vice Chancellor of the University, Lord Boyle of Handsworth, (also a former Conservative Minister of Education, 1962–64).
