Galleries host spring up cultural festival
Artist talks, virtual reality exploration and a jam-packed symposium.
Discover the sensational programme for spring up, the first-ever cultural festival from the University of Leeds, packed with theatre shows, concerts, art, dance and panels.
From 11 to 21 March, the University campus will be alive with cultural events springing up at key venues: the galleries, stage@leeds, Leeds University Union and Clothworkers Centenary Concert Hall.
Cultural Collections & Galleries are thrilled to be playing a part in spring up, with three free events to support the festival’s aim to connect with culture.
A Continuous Circulation: Maurice de Sausmarez in Leeds
On Thursday 12 March, Treasures of Brotherton Gallery will present a half day symposium to mark Maurice de Sausmarez’s contribution to the cultural life of Leeds. The afternoon includes a roundtable discussion, a film screening with a Q&A session and a reading of de Sausmarez’s 1951 radio broadcast. Dr Kerry Harker, an experienced curator and co-founder of The Tetley, will deliver a keynote speech. The event is a collaboration with Leeds Art University.
From Portrait to Pixel: Historic Objects in Virtual Worlds
An exciting showcase of the innovative work of MA Digital Design Futures students explores virtual reality worlds using cutting-edge 3D technologies. They have transformed historic busts from our collections into interactive pieces. Visit Treasures of Brotherton Gallery on Tuesday 17 March to put on a virtual reality headset and haptic gloves and step into a world where you can interact with objects in ways never before possible. The event supports a current exhibition ‘Who am I to you?’.
‘Them and [uz]’: Artist Panel Discussion
A special panel discussion, at stage@leeds on Thursday 19 March, invites artists to discuss the latest exhibition at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery. ‘[uz], [uz], [uz]: Artists from Working-Class Backgrounds’ celebrates the breadth and vitality of work by artists from working-class backgrounds. The panel will be chaired by Dr Laura Claveria, Exhibition Curator at the University of Leeds Cultural Collection & Galleries, with exhibiting artists to sharing their practice, process and thoughts around the exhibition theme.
