Passion and music intertwine in new Treasures exhibition
How did a church organist from Sheffield amass a Mendelssohn collection that is the largest private collection in Europe?
“Gather them in”: the Musical Treasures of W.T. Freemantle explores the hidden story of the passionate collector who managed to build the largest collection of material relating to Mendelssohn outside of the composer’s own family.
The exhibition is guest-curated by Dr Bryan White from the School of Music at the University of Leeds. It builds on new research and brings to light the untold story of Freemantle’s significant musical collection and reveals the true extent of his achievements.
On Thursday 28 February, the Treasures of the Brotherton Gallery will host a preview from 6–8pm including a musical accompaniment from the Clothworkers Consort of Leeds chamber choir.
While this is a free event, tickets are required. Book your place using Eventbrite.
The exhibition will open to the public from Friday 1 March.
