Registers
Object types in Special Collections
Registers are an official record of names or items. They showinformation observed, recorded and measured for the purposes of the organisation. Registers contain tabulated, quantative information, often about large groups of people. Researchers can use this type of information for many different purposes. A single burial register, could provide different information for genealogists, medical or social historians.
Registers can be read alongside history books and contemporary newspapers; they offer detailed and business-specific information about employment procedures and practices which can give depth to more general sources of an historical period.
Registers, like minute books, are often found in Business Archives. Special Collections holds extensive business archives which include wage ledgers, correspondence, apprentice agreements, maps and plans.
