During the Civil War currency was in short supply. This unusually-shaped shilling is known as a siege piece as it was made inside Pontefract castle whilst it was under attack by Cromwell’s forces.
Issued to pay the garrison defending the castle, it was made by melting down any available silver bullion and plate. The inscription 'DVM SPIRO SPERO' translates as Whilst I breathe, I hope, and was struck the year prior to Charles I’s execution.
