Special Collections holds one of the largest collections of Bram Stoker manuscripts and correspondence in the United Kingdom, part of the Brotherton Collection. The collection includes over 3,400 an example of which is seen here.
This letter was sent from Robert Leighton, a Daily Mail journalist and references an incident involving a Russian ship entering Whitby harbour which may have formed the basis for a similar passage in Stoker’s novel.
Much of the Stoker correspondence we hold relates to his work as a theatre manager, and illustrates relationships with many key figures of the age.
The Brotherton Collection also includes manuscripts of several short pieces by Stoker, including 'Personal Impressions of America', 'Secret of the Growing Gold' and 'Seven Golden Buttons'.
