The poetry notebooks often contain multiple typed-up drafts pasted one on top of the other. Hill would revise the pasted-in draft, then type a new version and paste it on top, repeating the process until a final version was reached, or the attempt was fully crossed out.

This page contains four separate typescript drafts pasted one on top of the other. This image, taken using a light box, allows us to read underneath the top draft, and decipher the draft underneath it.
