Special Collections catalogue search help

Finding material to view online

Determining whether material is available online

Parts of our collections have been digitised and are therefore available for you to view online. Watch this video to see how to determine whether material is available online or not:

There are a few ways to determine which catalogue records contain images for you to view online:

  • use the panel on the left-hand side of the desktop view of the results page to refine your search to only those records “containing digital images” (these filters may be located underneath the search options if you are viewing the catalogue on a different type of device)
  • scroll through the list of the results and look for records that have a rectangular tab next to their classmark stating that they contain digital media, this means that they represent either a single digitised item, or a collection that contains digital material
  • look at the catalogue pages of individual items, those that have been digitised have the tab next to the item’s classmark stating “Contains digital media” and also a display window through which to view the online images.

The image display window can be used to view the digitised images. Use the navigation buttons to click through the pages, zoom in or out, or change the display to "full screen" as needed.

Searching for digital images

You may want to narrow down your search to only include material that you can view online. Watch this video to see how to search for digital images:

Use the Advanced search link directly under the search box to see a “Browse items that have digital media" tab. This will bring up a new page consisting of all Special Collections material that contains digital media, such as images and audio.

The panel on the left-hand side of the desktop view provides many options to further refine a search, for example by limiting your search to "records containing digital images" only. These filters may be located underneath the search options if you are viewing the catalogue on a different type of device.
