Michael Fake

Michael is responsible for the Library’s student-facing services. These include customer services, learning services, library buildings, and communication and engagement.

The Customer Services team manages the enquiry service and reception desks. Their aim is to help customers get the most from the library and help them to find the resources they need.

The Learning Development team provides Skills@Library, the University’s academic skills programme for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students. They also work with staff to provide resources and in-curriculum academic skills teaching.

Michael has oversight of the Library buildings, working to improve facilities and environment. He is also responsible for the Library’s communication and student engagement activities.

Michael is particularly interested in understanding the student experience. He wants to make sure the Library responds to customer needs so that students and staff get the best experience we can provide. He leads projects using qualitative and quantitative methods of evaluation to achieve this.

Michael has worked at Leeds University Libraries since 2017. He is a member of the Northern Collaboration Directors Group.

He has worked for the White Rose Libraries, a regional collaboration between the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield, and York. Before that, he managed a team of liaison librarians at the London School of Economics. He has also worked in a variety of library roles at both LSE and at Goldsmiths, University of London.
