These databases are available for use by Leeds staff and students both on and off-site within the terms of the license agreements. Off-site users will need to login using their Leeds username and password.

Key databases

Asahi Shimbun Kikuzo II Visual

Kikuzo II Visual is a database of the Asahi Shimbun, one of Japan's oldest and largest national daily newspapers. Search the full text from 1985 to the present.

Kikuzo II Visual also includes:

  • articles from AERA and Shukan Asahi, two leading weekly magazines
  • image data of the pages of the Asahi Shimbun Reduced-size Facsimile Edition from 1879 to 1989
  • the Historical Photo Archive (photographs mostly taken in Asia during the World War II period)
  • archive contents of the pictorial magazine, Asahi Graph, from 1923 to 1956
  • Who's Who database and the Chiezo Keyword Database (a modern term dictionary).

Bibliography of Asian Studies

This database allows you to search over 700,000 books and journal articles on all subjects (especially in the humanities and social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971. This resource is no longer updated and users seeking monographs are urged to consult other general resources and databases, such as RLIN.

Box of Broadcasts

BoB (Box of Broadcasts) National is a shared online off-air TV and radio recording service for UK higher and further education institutions. It enables you to choose and record any broadcast programme from 60+ TV and radio channels. The recorded programmes are then kept indefinitely and added to a growing media archive (currently at over 1 million programmes), with all content shared by users across all subscribing institutions.

China Academic Journals

Search for full-text articles from 1,870 Chinese journals on Literature, Philosophy, History, Archaeology, Music, Arts, etc. The database is updated daily. Access dates back to 1994, with some journals available from the first issue.

CNKI Express 2.0 Manual (University Login required)

China National Data

Find Chinese statistical data concerning every aspect of China including: GDP, agriculture, finance, FDI, population, employment, wages, industry, energy, investment in fixed assets, real estate development and investment, construction, wholesale and retail, accommodation and catering, price index, urban and rural residents’ income and expenditure. There’s also data on travel, transport and health in China.

Data can be viewed monthly, quarterly and annually, and by regions and provinces. China National Data is a freely available online statistical database produced by the National Bureau of Statistics of China.

Overview of database

Chinese Film and Newsreel Scripts from the Cultural Revolution

The collection of film advertisements and transcripts of Chinese documentary films and newsreels is made up of around 1750 items. It spans the years 1946 to 1985, although the bulk of the items in the collection are transcripts for the documentary films and newsreels from the Cultural Revolution, 1966-1976. All documents in the collection are in Chinese

Dimensions

Dimensions is the world’s largest linked-research database, covering articles, grants, patents, clinical trials, datasets, policy documents and technical reports. It also provides research metrics. There is a free version open to all, or a subscription version.

You must register for an account with your Leeds email address to get full access, from a computer within the University’s IP range or through the virtual desktop. Once you are registered, you can access the database from off-campus. If you are a student, you can put “student” in the job title field.

JSTOR provides access to more than 10 million academic journal articles, books, and primary sources in 75 disciplines including Art and Art History, Performing Arts, Architecture and Music.

Citations and some full text to articles and other materials for literature, language, linguistics, folklore and film. From 1926 onwards, and updated twice a year.

National Diet Library Digital Collections

The National Diet Library acquires everything published in Japan. The National Diet Library Digital Collections is the main online portal that allows you to search and view a variety of these resources, including books, journals, dissertations and newspapers. Coverage starts from 2004. There is no access to subscription content.

National Social Sciences Database

The National Social Sciences Database (NSSD) is an open access philosophy and social science information platform built by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The database includes more than 1,000 academic journals dating back to 1921, more than 4.85 million papers, and more than 1.01 million scholars and 21,000 research institutions.

Nexis

An excellent source of news information, including international newspapers, trade publications and company information. All articles are available in full text. You can to narrow down your search by limiting the dates or by choosing a specific set of newspapers. For example you can choose to search across all English language newspapers or just UK national newspapers. Updated daily.

Scopus

Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals and quality web sources, with smart tools to track, analyse and visualize research. Coverage starts from 1823.

Visualising China

The site offers researchers free open access to major online collections such as Historical Photographs of China (University of Bristol), the Sir Robert Hart Collection (Queen’s University, Belfast) and Joseph Needham’s Photographs of Wartime China (Needham Research Institute, Cambridge), as well as to previously unseen and private collections and a selected Google Books library of China related publications. Coverage from 1850 to 1950.

Web of Science

Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A current awareness service provides citation alerts for newly added journal articles. Each database is updated weekly.
