Key databases


Africabib An open access database covering African studies publications on a wide range of topics. It consists of the following seven databases: Africana Periodical Literature; African Women; Women Travellers to Africa; Islam in Africa; Kenya Coast; Water and Africa; Education in Africa.
ATLA Religion Allows you to search for journal articles in theology and religious studies. It provides information on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues. Coverage spans from 1949 to the present. There are no full text articles on ATLA, so check the Library catalogue to see if the Library has the article you want. Guide to using ATLA Religion
Bridgeman Education Bridgeman Education is a complete visual resource offering over 1,000,000 digital images of art, history and culture from global museums, galleries, private collections and contemporary artists all copyright cleared for educational use. Due to technical limitations, Bridgeman Education is only available on campus, or through Desktop Anywhere. Guide to using Bridgeman Education
Dimensions Dimensions is the world’s largest linked-research database, covering articles, grants, patents, clinical trials, datasets, policy documents and technical reports. It also provides research metrics. There is a free version open to all, or a subscription version. You must register for an account with your Leeds email address to get full access, from a computer within the University’s IP range or through the virtual desktop. Once you are registered, you can access the database from off-campus. If you are a student, you can put “student” in the job title field. Guide to using Dimensions
Early English Books Online Almost all subjects are covered: English literature, history, philosophy, linguistics, theology, music, fine arts, education, mathematics, and science. Contains digital page images of virtually every work printed in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America and works in English printed elsewhere from 1473 to 1700, beginning with the first book printed in English by William Caxton. Contains about 100,000 of over 125,000 titles listed in Pollard & Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue (1475-1640) and Wing's Short-Title Catalogue (1641-1700) and their revised editions, as well as the Thomason Tracts (1640-1661) collection and the Early English Books Tract Supplement. Early European Books Early European Books traces the history of printing in Europe from its origins through to the end of the seventeenth century, offering full colour, high resolution facsimile images of rare and hard to access printed sources to 1700. The project to create this database is working in partnership with five national Libraries to digitise their curated collections from this period. Guide to using Early European Books
Eighteenth Century Collections Online This database, which contains over 180,000 titles, allows you to search or read the full text of books, pamphlets, essays or broadsides printed in the UK or the Americas between 1701 and 1800, on any topic. Works included are primarily in English but some foreign language material printed in England is also present. As well as searching the text you can view page images and illustrative content. Erudit Erudit gives free access to French-language resources in the social sciences and humanities from the North American region. It indexes journal articles, books and proceedings, theses and dissertations, and research reports.
History of Science, Technology and Medicine This database allows you to search for journal articles, conference proceedings, books and dissertations in the history of science, technology, and medicine and allied historical fields. Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy Provides open access to detailed scholarly information on key topics and philosophers in all areas of philosophy. The database allows you to search for full text entries and most of the articles are original contributions by specialised philosophers. Established in 1995 it is updated regularly.
IsisCB Explore IsisCB Explore is a research tool for the history of science, whose core dataset comes from bibliographical citations in the Isis Bibliography of the History of Science. The IsisCB contains over 40 years of curated bibliographical data and contains over 400,000 indexed works. The dataset is composed of three main types of records: citations, authorities, and relationships.
J-Stage J-STAGE is an electronic journal platform for STEM information in Japan, developed and managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). J-STAGE supports Japanese societies and research organisations, and has published more than 3,000 journals, conference proceedings and other academic publications.
JSTOR JSTOR provides access to more than 10 million academic journal articles, books, and primary sources in 75 disciplines including Art and Art History, Performing Arts, Architecture and Music. Guide to using JSTOR
Library of Latin Texts Online This is a database of Christian Latin Texts, including the Corpus Christianorum editions, supplemented by other texts. This database allows you to search for the full text of works by early Christian authors and to search within these texts. It is useful for Theology and Religious Studies, History, Classics and Medieval Studies. Coverage from Classical Antiquity to 1965. This database is updated at irregular intervals. Making of the Modern World This database covers 1450 to 1850 and provides digital facsimile images of 61,000 works on economics, business and trade, giving insights into the economic, social and political conditions of the time. Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Search for full text biographies of all notable deceased public figures who have influenced British history and culture. Useful for any subject. The database is updated three times a year. The printed volumes of all editions and supplemental volumes are shelved in the Brotherton Library General Reference Collection. PhilPapers A comprehensive index and bibliography of philosophy research sources including journals, books, open access archives, and personal pages maintained by academics.
Project MUSE Project MUSE is a platform for digital humanities and social sciences journals and e-books from a number of scholarly publishers. It also includes open access content.
Science in the Nineteenth-Century Periodical This database provides a scholarly synopsis of the material relating to science, technology and medicine appearing in 16 general British periodicals from the nineteenth century. Scopus Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals and quality web sources, with smart tools to track, analyse and visualize research. Coverage starts from 1823. Guide to using Scopus
Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy Search for full text entries on topics in philosophy. Each entry is kept up to date by an expert or group of experts in the field. All entries and updates are refereed by the members of a scholarly editorial board before they are made public. The Lens The Lens aggregates and provides access to over 225 million scholarly works, patent records and patent sequences from across the world. Its goal is to enable more people to make better decisions, informed by evidence.
Web of Science Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. IsisCB Explore is a research tool for the history of science, whose core dataset comes from bibliographical citations in the Isis Bibliography of the History of Science. The IsisCB contains over 40 years of curated bibliographical data and contains over 400,000 indexed works. The dataset is composed of three main types of records: citations, authorities, and relationships.

J-Stage

J-STAGE is an electronic journal platform for STEM information in Japan, developed and managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). J-STAGE supports Japanese societies and research organisations, and has published more than 3,000 journals, conference proceedings and other academic publications.

JSTOR

JSTOR provides access to more than 10 million academic journal articles, books, and primary sources in 75 disciplines including Art and Art History, Performing Arts, Architecture and Music.
