Key databases for Geological Sciences

If you need to find journal articles about a subject that you are researching or studying, it is important to search journal databases. Type your topic into the search screen of the database to obtain a list of relevant journal articles, and remember to look at help screens or Library guides to make the most of what is on offer.

AAPG Datapages

Search the AAPG Bulletin, Special Publications and Environmental Geosciences, plus publications of 27 AAPG-affiliated societies and sections.

Engineering Village

Subjects covered include engineering geology, environmental science, nanotechnology, geophysics, petroleum engineering and physics. This is the biggest and broadest engineering and computing database in the world. Search for journal articles, technical reports and conference proceedings. Includes the research databases Compendex and Inspec and the book collection Referex. It is better to de-select Referex if you are looking specifically for articles, as it improves the search.

Lyell Collection

Online access to the Journal of the Geological Society, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis, Geological Society of London Special Publications and Memoirs, Engineering Geology Special Publications, Transactions of the Geological Society, and the Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society. It is possible to search within an individual title or across the full collection.

OnePetro

OnePetro is a multi-society library that provides a simple way to search for and access a broad range of technical literature related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry. From one place, you can search documents from many different professional societies, or similar organisations, that serve the oil and gas industry. Scopus is a large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals and quality web sources, with smart tools to track, analyze and visualize research.

Web of Science

Search for journal articles using three databases; Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index. A current awareness service provides citation alerts for newly added journal articles. Each database is updated weekly.
