Armitage recorded his own thoughts, comments, and more general observations about the poem as he worked his way through the process of translation. These are documented in the back of the Gawain notebook, and appear to have been recorded at different points during the translation.

He presumably intended to use them for an introduction to the text, as the first note on this page implies:

“Not much is known about the author commonly referred to as the Gawain poet." would become “We know next to nothing about the author of the poem which has come to be called Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” in the introduction to the Faber & Faber edition.
