Work experience scheme

Our work experience scheme gives school pupils an insight into what it’s like to work in a busy, modern academic library.

Pupils will:

  • learn about how libraries support university learning and research
  • develop key workplace skills, such as communication and teamwork
  • gain varied experience working with our Libraries teams
  • get a behind-the-scenes look at our collections, services and digital tools.

Who can take part?

Our scheme is designed for secondary school students and college students under the age of 18 who are completing a formal work experience placement through their school or college.

What to expect

We aim to make the experience rewarding, safe and inspiring for every pupil. The five-day work experience placement will take place in one working week and will include:

  • a friendly induction
  • full health and safety guidance
  • daily supervision by a named staff member
  • a safe and supportive working environment
  • a varied programme of tasks like customer service, book handling, communications and digital cataloguing
  • a chance to reflect on the experience and gain useful feedback.

The tasks will be performed across our four university libraries on our Leeds campus.

Work experience placements are unpaid. We may be able to provide support with reasonable travel costs. There will be an opportunity to request this support before you attend.

How to apply

To apply, pupils should complete the Work Experience Application Form.
