In France, too, the pagan story of Cupid and Psyche experienced its reinterpretation with the help of Christian philosophy and Biblical imagery.
Pierre Martin Victor Richard de Laprade (1812-1883) was a French poet of religious verse. His Psyché (1841) combines classical motifs of the Cupid and Psyche story with Biblical themes. After a long introduction (36 pages), an invocation starts the set of poems, setting the story into a Biblical as well as pagan context. Eden is continuously evoked, and Psyche is compared to Eve.
