ORCID identifier

What is an ORCID identifier?

An ORCIDĀ® iD is a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher. When you register with ORCID you can include your iD in the author details of new articles you publish and link previously published work to your profile.

Your ORCID iD can be used throughout your career. It can be transferred with you if you move to a different institution by simply updating your affiliation and contact details on your ORCID profile page.

Why should I use an ORCID iD?

Evidence suggests that using a unique author identifier system such as ORCID means that research outputs are accurately linked to a researcher's profile, so the bibliometric data about you and your body of work will be more accurate. This improves the visibility of the research.

Having an ORCID iD can be particularly useful in overcoming problems with:

  • inconsistent name formats
  • legal name changes
  • highly similar names
  • common names

The University publications policy encourages researchers to register for an ORCID iD. It is now a requirement for any grant applications to the Wellcome Trust and NIHR to include the applicant's ORCID iD. Other funders such as RCUK recommend the use of ORCID iDs. From 2016 the University will be asked for ORCID iDs in HESA returns.

How do I acquire an ORCID iD?

Via the ORCID website
All researchers, staff or student, can create an iD via the ORCID website.

Via Employee Self Service
Leeds staff can create an iD via the ORCiD tab in Employee Self ServiceView the ORCID iD quick start guide for Employee Self Service (PDF). If you require help, please contact itservicedesk@leeds.ac.uk

Via Symplectic
Leeds staff and research students can create an iD via Symplectic, the University publications database. View the ORCID iD quick start guide for Symplectic (PDF). If you require help, please contact itservicedesk@leeds.ac.uk

How do I link my ORCID iD to University systems?

Once you have an ORCID iD, the University would like you to link it to both your staff profile via Employee Self Service and your Symplectic profile.

Linking to your staff profile
Leeds staff can link an existing iD to their staff profile via the ORCiD tab in Employee Self Service. View the ORCID iD quick start guide for Employee Self Service (PDF). If you require help, please contact itservicedesk@leeds.ac.uk

Linking to Symplectic
Leeds staff and research students can link an existing iD to their Symplectic profile. View the ORCID iD quick start guide for Symplectic (PDF). If you require help, please contact itservicedesk@leeds.ac.uk

Once connected, Symplectic will treat your ORCID account as a source of publications data and the presence of an ORCID will lead to improved auto-claiming of publications for you. However you should continue to manually add details of all newly accepted outputs to Symplectic to meet University and HEFCE open access requirements.
