Organise with groups and tabs

Use tags to organise your library

In EndNote 21 you can assign tags to your references, providing another way to categorise them in addition to groups. This could be useful if you want to tag papers according to study design, or to prioritise which papers you want to review first after importing them from a literature search. You can rename tags and also colour-code them using seven different colours. Tags will show up in your EndNote library, but not in your Word document.

To assign a tag to a reference:

  1. Select the reference in the library.
  2. Either:
Right-click the reference and choose Manage Tags, or
Open the right-hand Summary or Edit panel and click the Manage Tags button.
  3. Choose a tag you’ve already created, or choose Create Tag.
  4. Give the tag a name and assign a colour.
  5. You can assign more than one tag to the reference. Once you have selected all the tags you want to use for this reference, click OK.

You can see the colours of the tags on the reference’s title in your library. The tags are also displayed on the ‘Summary’ and ‘Edit’ panels on the right-hand side of the library.

All your tags are displayed in a section on the left-hand panel of the library. Clicking on a tag will show you every reference that has been assigned that tag.
