Funder requirements

Major research funders require that research outputs produced as part of their funded projects must be open access. These funders include RCUK, Wellcome Trust, NIHR (National Institute for Health Research) and EU Horizon 2020.

The University receives grants for publishing costs from RCUK and Charity Open Access Fund (COAF, which includes the Wellcome Trust). To receive the funding, you must meet the policy requirements.

Funders set different requirements about what and how outputs are made open access. You should check the funder policy using Sherpa Juliet before publishing.

University and REF requirements

The HEFCE open access policy states that journal articles, and any conference proceedings with an ISSN, must be made open access within three months of acceptance for publication, to be eligible for the next REF.

The University's publications policy (PDF) requires authors to upload the full text of all publications to the University publications database.
