EndNote Online guide

Sync EndNote Online with your desktop library

If you want to use EndNote on campus computers as well as your personal computer, you can use EndNote Online to sync your library so that you will have the same references on both machines. Only one EndNote desktop library can sync to your EndNote Online account at a time.

Synchronising libraries for the first time is a two-step process. First you must synchronise your university files with EndNote Online, and then synchronise to your personal computer. As part of this process, you can set your libraries to automatically sync in future.

This applies if you are using AppsAnywhere on a personal device. If you’re using the Windows Virtual Desktop on your device and on-campus computers, your files are always saved to your M: drive, so no sync is needed.

Synchronise your university files with EndNote Online with these steps:

  1. Using a university computer, open your EndNote library.
  2. Go to “Edit”, then “Preferences”.
  3. Choose “Sync” from the menu, and fill in your EndNote Online username and password (your “account credentials”).
  4. At the bottom of the EndNote Preferences Sync window, choose to make your library sync automatically.
  5. Click “Apply” to save your settings and then “OK” to exit the preferences window.
  6. Click “Library” and then “Sync” to start the syncing process.

Next, synchronise your personal device with EndNote Online by repeating those same steps on your personal device:

  1. Using your personal device, create and save a new EndNote Library.
  2. Go to “Edit”, then “Preferences”.
  3. Choose “Sync” from the menu, and fill in your EndNote username and password (your “account credentials”).
  4. At the bottom of the EndNote Preferences Sync window choose to make your library sync automatically.
  5. Click “Apply” and then “OK” to exit the preferences window.
  6. Click “Library” and then “Sync” to start the syncing process. Your references from EndNote Online should start appearing in the library.

Before you add citations to a Word document on your home or university computer, open the EndNote tab in Word and click “Update citations and bibliography” to make sure any newly added references are up to date.
